St Pauls Carnival and Circomedia proudly present Sadler’s Wells Associate Artist, Breakin Convention Director and hip hop theatre legend, Jonzi D in ‘The Letter’ – his acclaimed solo work that had its explosive debut at Sadlers Wells’ Lilian Baylis Studio.

Co-directed with Dawn Walton, The Letter explores the responses to Jonzi being offered an MBE. Using choreopoetry he paints a picture of  ‘stunning, rhythmical clarity’ (The Stage), looking at this sensitive subject matter through the eyes of an animated cast of characters. The Letter is accompanied by a commissioned score from Speakers Corner Quartet member, Kwake Bass

The evening also features a newly commissioned piece, exploring the broken lineage between the old skool and new skool hip hop generations. An exciting collaboration with Ivan Blackstock, of BirdGang Dance Company, it promises to captivate audiences with Jonzi’s trademark wit, humour and style.

A post show Q&A will follow the performances and opening the evening are local young guest artists from State of Emergency’s ‘Re-Position’ dance theatre company, who worked with Jonzi earlier in 2012.

As two St Pauls based arts organization, St Pauls Carnival and Circomedia are excited to co-present this fresh, pioneering and relevant performance from one of hip hop’s most respected artists.

“The name Jonzi D shouts respect in circles of hip hop dance theatre”
